WHY DO PEOPLE TAKE/MAKE PHOTOGRAPHS?
There are so many different reasons as to why people take photographs. Even a single photo can have different meanings to different people. Photographs are powerful, they can stir up different types of emotions in everyone. People may take photographs to:
Capture a moment/remember something
Make a statement
Show something to people unable to be in the actual moment
Show something
For art
To sell something
To create awareness

WHY IS PHOTOGRAPHY IMPORTANT?
Again, there are so many different reasons. It is important because a photograph holds a snippet of time forever. The people/objects/places in photographs change and age, but the image of them in the photo will always show them in the moment it was taken. It is important because it documents important events (i.e. riots, protests, wars etc.) in a way that writing and videos can't. A single photograph can be very powerful. I chose the photo below, a monk burning himself in protest, to show why photography is important. It is one of my favorite historical photographs and I think it is important because it shows the lengths people will go for their cause, and makes the person viewing it understand and believe it more than they ever could from just reading it in a textbook. Photography is important for so many reasons, I chose to show this one because it really is a very powerful picture.

WHAT SKILLS DO YOU NEED TO BE A GOOD PHOTOGRAPHER?
You need a good eye for photography. What I mean by this is that you can see how anything could make a good picture and you know how to take a good picture, seeing the potential for a photograph in something as simple as the floor or a wall. You also need to know about composition and framing in photos, using lines and positioning to attract peoples attention to certain things in the photograph.

HOW DOES PHOTOGRAPHY HELP US SEE THE WORLD?
Photography helps us see different parts of the world from home. It shows us different cultures, cities, landscapes, people and it helps us see the world as somewhere with billions of different people and places. It shows us that the world isn't just our surroundings and there's much more to it than we'd sever be able to see without photographs. CAN PHOTOGRAPHIC IMAGES BE TRUSTED? Not really. Some images may be edited or planned out. This means only the person who took/edited the photo knows the truth behind it and that we can't fully trust what we think is happening in the image. WHAT ARE THE SIMILARITIES AND DIFFERENCES BETWEEN PHOTOGRAPHY AND OTHER TYPES OF VISUAL ART? Photography is quite basic compared to other types of visual art. The similarities are that they both may include images of something and they both may be edited. The differences are that visual art may be heavily edited and it may include other elements that basic photographs don't. WHEN WOULD IT NOT BE OK TO TAKE A PHOTOGRAPH? If someone doesn't want to be photographed then it's not ok then. Also, if there is a wrong reason behind it. For example, when people were going to Grenfell Tower Block after it burned down, they were taking selfies with it in the background or taking pictures of it to show off that they went there, I personally think that it's not ok to take a photo of something as tragic as that to show off. HOW DO YOU KNOW WHEN YOU'VE MADE A GOOD PHOTOGRAPH? If I like it and I'm proud of it. And I guess if people around me like it too. ARE PHOTOGRAPHERS ALSO ARTISTS? In a way they are, some types of photography is way more art-related than others (i.e. fashion photography is usually quite artistic). Photography is its own type of art. WHERE IS THE BEST PLACE TO SEE PHOTOGRAPHS? In a gallery/exhibition or even on instagram. WHAT KIND OF PHOTOGRAPHY INTERESTS YOU MOST? Fashion probably does, matching clothes to backgrounds and adding in objects and stuff to show off the clothing interests me. Also Portraiture as I like photographs of rappers and people within that culture and photos by Gunner Stahl and Rayscorruptedmind of these people interest me. WHAT CONFUSES OR FRUSTRATES YOU ABOUT PHOTOGRAPHY? Finding the lines to draw attention and directing the light in photos, it seems very hard to do right. |
