Keld Helmer-Petersen
Keld Helmer-Petersen was a Danish photographer who experimented with Black Light photography. He was inspired by Albert Renger-Patzsch. His career took off when he published 122 Colour Photographs in 1948, he experimented with taking pictures that only worked in colour and not black and white. He later did the opposite and experimented with black light photography when he released Black Noise. He's often seen as the 'pioneer of colour' even though I'm studying his black light photography work. He is acclaimed for his images of structures, patterns and details found in industrial areas, similar to Renger-Patzsch's work.
Harry Callahan
Harry Callahan is regarded as one of the most influential figures in post-war photography. He influenced Helmer-Petersen and his work demonstrates a sustained interest in line and composition which figures strongly in his studies of nature as well as his cityscapes. His black and white photographs captured his wife, life in the city and natural places.
Aaron Siskind
Aaron Siskind was an American photographer who also influenced Helmer-Petersen. He is known for being part of the abstract and expressionist movement, Siskind's abstract photographs from the late 1940s and early 1950s were also a major force in the development of avant-garde art in America. Like Albert Renger-Patzsch, he focused on showing the inner beauty of things.
My Work
After studying other artists who have experimented with Black Light, I went out to take my own photos. I took lots of trees because I thought the branches against the sky would make for a good Black Light photograph. The main thing O looked for whilst taking these photos were shapes that would look good if they were black lighted, my favourite photograph is the one of the olden sculpture with the 'This Way' sign on it, I really like how it turned out due to the shape of the wooden sculpture.
